Success story from the Institute of Parasitology

Cristian Alvarez

Cristian Alvarez has been appointed as Assistant Professor in Veterinary Parasitology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. This university is one of the oldest academic institutions in Chile and is currently ranked #1 in Latin America, according to the QS report. Cristian joined the Zoonoses and Translational Research group at the Institute of Parasitology (IPZ) in March 2017 after working at the University of Melbourne in Australia. During his time at IPZ, Cristian co-supervised one master and four veterinary doctoral students from the Vetsuisse Faculty; supported students from Argentina, Bolivia and Chile to complete their PhDs. He co-authored 15 publications (three of them in preparation) and acquired funding from the Leading House for the Latin American Region and the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office. Together with Prof. Peter Deplazes, he focused on the investigation on the transmission of Echinococcus species in vegetables. He also established a strong collaboration with researchers in South America through the PERITAS project funded by the EU, focusing on the diagnostic of Echinococcus granulosus eggs in the environment. In his new position, he will establish himself as a leading researcher in veterinary parasitology.

Congratulations!
